On August 25, 2026, Dolly Parton died in Nashville at the age of 80. In the days that followed, fans went back through everything she had shared in her final weeks. What they found on her Instagram page stopped many of them in their tracks.

Her last post, shared just ten days before her death, was not about any of her own famous songs. It was a video of Dolly, sparkling and smiling, singing “Islands in the Stream” with her old friend Kenny Rogers, with a short caption marking 43 years of the song.

Of all the moments she could have chosen, she chose that one. To understand why, you have to go back to a recording studio in 1983.

A song written for someone else

“Islands in the Stream” was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. They borrowed the title from an Ernest Hemingway novel, and according to Dolly’s own official website, they originally wrote it with Marvin Gaye in mind as an R&B song.

Instead, it ended up with Kenny Rogers, who was making his album Eyes That See in the Dark with Barry Gibb producing. Kenny planned to sing it alone. It did not go well.

Four days and one good idea

Kenny later told People that he worked on the song for four days without getting it right. Finally, he admitted to Barry Gibb that he did not even like the song anymore. Barry’s answer changed music history. What they needed, he said, was Dolly Parton.

By a stroke of luck, Dolly happened to be in the same building. Kenny’s manager, Ken Kragen, was sent to catch her before she left. She agreed to come in, and Kenny never forgot the moment she walked through the door:

“Once she came in and started singing the song was never the same.”

Before that session, Dolly and Kenny were only acquaintances. They had recorded each other’s songs and crossed paths a few times, but “Islands in the Stream” was their first duet. By the end of it, they had the beginning of a friendship that would last the rest of their lives.

A No. 1 on every chart that mattered

The song was released on Kenny’s album in August 1983. It reached No. 1 on the pop, country and adult contemporary charts, hitting the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on October 29, 1983. It earned the pair a Grammy nomination and became the song fans asked for every time they shared a stage.

They went on to record many more songs together, including “Real Love,” a Christmas album, and “You Can’t Make Old Friends.” But “Islands in the Stream” always stayed at the center. When Kenny Rogers retired from the road, he and Dolly sang it together one final time at his 2017 farewell tribute concert in Nashville.

“I will always love you”

Kenny Rogers died on March 20, 2020, at 81. The next morning, Dolly posted a tearful video holding up a photo of the two of them. She said her heart was broken, and she put it this way:

“A big old chunk of it has gone with him today.”

She added that above all the music and the success, she had loved him as a wonderful man and a true friend. And she signed off with the words she had written decades earlier for someone else, words that now belonged to Kenny: “I will always love you.”

The Rogers family’s goodbye

Six years later, it was Kenny’s family who had to say goodbye to Dolly. In their tribute, they wrote that it was painstakingly hard to put into words what she had meant to Kenny and to all of them. They praised her compassion, her generosity and the joy she brought to millions, and they said she had simply traded her butterfly wings for angel wings.

Then they closed the circle. Their final words to her echoed the ones she had given Kenny in 2020: they would think of her every step of the way, and they would always love her.

Dolly Parton could have ended her time on Instagram with any song from a career of more than sixty years. She picked the one she sang with her friend.
