On April 29, 2023, more than 17,000 people filled the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles to celebrate Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday. The stage was crowded with legends. But one of the most unforgettable moments of the night came when Rosanne Cash, the daughter of Johnny Cash, sang a song written by Kris Kristofferson, and Kris himself walked out to sing it with her.

By the end, Rosanne’s voice had broken. Kris finished the line for her. And as they held each other, her microphone caught a sound that many fans have never forgotten.

A Surprise Nobody Could Promise

Kris Kristofferson had officially retired from music and acting in January 2021. He was 86 years old in 2023, and his appearance at Willie’s birthday shows was never a sure thing.

Rosanne Cash later described the plan in an essay for Rolling Stone. She would sing “Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I’ll Ever Do Again).” It was unclear whether Kris would be able to join her. But if he could, he would walk out after the first verse and surprise the audience.

He made it. Rosanne began the song alone, and partway through the first verse Kris walked onstage. She wrapped her right arm around him, and the two of them sang together, smiling at each other like family.

Johnny Cash’s Daughter and Johnny Cash’s Brother

That is exactly what they were. Rosanne Cash met Kris Kristofferson when she was young. He was a struggling songwriter in Nashville, so desperate to get his songs heard that he famously landed a helicopter at Johnny Cash’s home. Johnny Cash became his champion, and later the two men formed The Highwaymen with Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Rosanne once said she thought of her father’s Highwaymen bandmates as his brothers. Kris was also part of her own musical beginning. The first time she ever sang on a record, it was on one of his songs, “Broken Freedom Song,” on an album by her father. Over the decades, she and Kris toured, recorded and stood up for causes together.

The Song, and the Word She Changed

Kris Kristofferson wrote “Loving Her Was Easier” for his 1971 album The Silver Tongued Devil and I. It is a song about memory and regret, about a love so complete that nothing afterward could ever compare. Willie Nelson recorded his own version in 1979, which made it a natural choice for his birthday celebration.

Rosanne had sung the song many times over the years, often changing “her” to “him.” But on this night at the Hollywood Bowl, she made a different change. She sang it as “Loving You Was Easier.”

With one small word, the song stopped being about a woman from long ago. It became a song sung straight to the man standing beside her, the man who wrote it.

The Last Chorus

As the song neared its end, the two old friends decided to sing the refrain one more time. This time, it was Rosanne who was overcome. Her voice caught in the middle of the line and she could not go on.

Kris Kristofferson carried the last few words on his own. When the song was over, Rosanne pulled him into a long embrace. In the video of the performance, at about three minutes and twenty seconds, you can hear what sounds like a sob slip into her microphone as they hold each other. Then they walked offstage together, still holding on.

One More Night

Many fans remember the duet with Rosanne as Kris Kristofferson’s final performance. In fact, he came back the very next night, April 30, to sing “Help Me Make It Through the Night” with Norah Jones. Those two nights at the Hollywood Bowl were the last times he ever performed in public.

Kris Kristofferson died at his home in Maui, Hawaii, on September 28, 2024. He was 88.

“It Brings Me to My Knees”

After his death, Rosanne Cash wrote a long remembrance of him for Rolling Stone. She called him one of the few people left who had known her as a child and loved her without her having to earn it. And she wrote about that night at Willie’s birthday party:

“It brings me to my knees that he sang with me.”

She had known for some time that he might not be with us much longer. But she said that did not make the loss any smaller. What remained was the songs, the films, the poetry, and one night in Los Angeles when he walked out to sing with the girl he had watched grow up.
